About Rowland Ward

First published in 1882 by Rowland Ward Limited, the Rowland Ward Records of Big Game is the oldest of its kind in existence and was initially entitled “Horn Measurements and Weights of the Great Game of the World”. Currently, this series of books is in its 29th edition, printed in 2014. The book contains measurements of nearly all species hunted across the globe and keeps track of who, where & when a particular specimen was hunted.

During the early days, this book was a valuable tool not only for hunters from all over the world but also for explorers & naturalists as no field guides existed at the time. It was thus a valuable resource of where which species are to be found. It has since developed into a book used exclusively by Big Game Hunters and is especially useful to African Professional Hunters who use the minimum entry measurements as an accurate and up to date gauge of what a fantastic trophy animal should be.

Rowland Ward is a prominent historical figure among the hunting community not only for his contributions with the publication of the record book but also for his taxidermy work on various Big Game Species in England. Possibly among Ward’s most well-known work is the taxidermy he did for Percy Powell-Cotton. Rowland Ward wanted to mount Powell-Cotton’s elephant, which had the second-largest tusks ever recorded, life-size. However, to do so would necessitate the extension of the roof of the building to accommodate such a giant trophy – this was something Powell-Cotton did not want to do. Rowland Ward felt so strongly that this elephant should be life-size that he made a deal with Powell-Cotton: Rowland Ward would do the taxidermy for free if Powell-Cotton would do the necessary remodelling to accommodate the full-size mount. They agreed, and the full-size mount can still be viewed today in the Powell-Cotton Museum at Quex Park.

About Safari Club International (SCI)

Safari Club International (SCI) is a not-for-profit organization of hunters whose primary missions are to protect the freedom to hunt and to promote wildlife conservation. With over 50,000 members and 180 chapters in the US and around the world, SCI and its members are passionate about hunting and about wildlife conservation.

Record Books are considered to be the epitome of encyclopedias of big game animals. The SCI Record Book of Big Game Animals uses SCI’s unique all-inclusive record-keeping system, the most used system in North America, to document our hunting heritage.

SCI is headquartered in Washington, D.C. in the USA and operates in the USA, Canada, Mexico, Europe and elsewhere around the world. From its headquarters, SCI educates policy-makers, regulators and the public globally on the role of hunting in society and the economy. Through its chapters, SCI raises millions of dollars for local conservation, education and humanitarian activities. In conjunction with its sister organization, the SCI Foundation, SCI provides on-the-ground conservation and anti-poaching funding.

SCI’s Washington-based activity covers local and state issues in the U.S., US federal laws and regulations, litigation involving wildlife, global treaties, hunting in North America, Europe and around the world. SCI carries out its business activities through its Fundraising, Membership and Chapter Operations Center in Tucson, Arizona.
